Should babies sleep facing up, sideways or face down? Should I use a cot or a convertible cot? Should I start with a bassinet? New parents usually face the big decision of where and how baby will sleep once they’re born.
It is easy to get confused with the many options available. The best position for baby to sleep is the safest one; which is facing up to avoid the risk of SID (Sudden infant death).
Where should your baby sleep? Where your baby should sleep is totally up to you and a matter of your comfort level. If you choose to have your baby in the same room with you, bassinets, Moses baskets, cradles, and other bedside sleepers are great. They are cosy and your newborn will feel comfortable in them. They also save you the stress of moving around so much when your newborn is still waking up a lot. Once your baby starts to feel uncomfortable or starts rolling into the edges, they will need to be moved to a bigger space.
Small sized cots are also good for when baby is born and can be used till baby is over a year. Some of them come with wheels for easy movement.
Pack and plays or Travel cots are foldable beds that you can take along with you if going away. They can also be used in the house. They have wheels and can be moved around easily. As baby grows, they can become play spaces.
Convertible cribs are bigger and can be used till baby is a toddler if conversion kits are added. They may or may not fit in your room. Nothing stops you from starting your newborn in a convertible crib if you want. If you choose to put it in a separate room, you might want to invest in a baby monitor so you can keep an eye on your baby better.
Your choice of sleeping option for your baby is totally up to you and what you think fits your lifestyle.
